We are greatly saddened by Electronic Arts' decision to end Pet Society on June 14.
James and I have been playing Pet Society since early 2009, first just for fun, then coming to enjoy a kind of freedom and expression within the game. We have a group of real-life and online friends who interact with us in the game.
Our pets, Scoop and Tizzy, quickly developed their own personalities and antics. I've kept a couple of earlier posts below to show how they started out. While our photos taken Pet Society are still up on Facebook, I'd like to document some of the adventures that were possible in this wonderful and inventive game.

Starting Out
The pets started out simply.

Tizzy was the first pet, in Spring 2009. She looked a bit confused, hence the name.
Scoop was all eyes and ears, alert to what was going on.
Together, they sounded like characters from a 1930s screwball comedy.
By summer they were having more fun and making more friends.
When the toy oxen dolls went on sale, Scoop bought 99 of them. This led to his first extended adventure.

Why we are here
My husband and I have been playing Pet Society for over a year now. We began out of sheer curiosity: what is this avatar business anyway? Why would anyone want to spend time doing this?
I tried it, and was charmed. My husband looked at it and was hooked. The program may have been conceived as "Second Life for three-year-olds" as he often claims, but it was a vast blank canvas upon which everyone created their own little worlds.
We are far from kids ourselves, well into AARP territory. Playing Pet Society taps into that inner world of play that can get lost in the hullabaloo of grown-up life. I think we need to be in touch with that playful part of ourselves, no matter how old we are, or how we get there.
